Sebaetdon is a special gift that adults give to children during Seollal (Lunar New Year). Money is placed in a red envelope and given with wishes for a happy new year.
Many Asian countries have this tradition. In China, it's called hóngbāo, and in Vietnam, it's called lì xì, both symbolizing good luck.
세뱃돈은 설날에 어른들이 아이들에게 주는 특별한 선물이에요. 빨간 봉투에 돈을 넣어서 새해 복을 기원하며 주시죠.
아시아의 많은 나라에서 이런 전통이 있어요. 중국에서는 홍바오, 베트남에서는 리시라고 부르며 행운을 상징해요.
The sebaetdon culture goes beyond a simple monetary gift; it embodies the warm affection shared between generations. These days, giving and receiving digital sebaetdon or sending money through mobile apps has become a trend.
Interestingly, the design of the envelopes and the meaning behind the amount of money differ from country to country. For example, in China, 8 is considered a lucky number, so amounts like 88 or 888 are preferred, while in Korea, round numbers in units of ten thousand are generally favored.
