Eritrea is a relatively young nation, having gained independence from Ethiopia in 1993. Its capital, Asmara, is sometimes called "Little Rome of Africa" due to its well-preserved Art Deco architecture from the Italian colonial period.
With a long history of struggle for independence, this country is composed of nine ethnic groups, and Tigrinya and Arabic are used as official languages. Recently, it has been focusing on developing its tourism industry and port cities.
